Did you know that your eyes also breathe oxygen? As we know, every organ in our body needs oxygen, and the eyes are no exception. The cornea or the thin film of membrane that covers the eye and protects it also has the ability to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere. Since no blood passes to the outermost part of the eye, it gets its oxygen directly from the environment courtesy of the cornea. This is essential for preserving the health of the eyes.
However, some people are actually at risk for not having enough supply of oxygen in their eyes. Usually, these are the people who regularly wear contact lenses. However, thanks to our technology, we have developed a type of contact lens, which may actually help lessen the risk of developing cornea oxygen deprivation; the Gas Permeable contact lenses. Gas Permeable contact lenses have many names. It can be called Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses or RGPS, Oxygen Permeable lenses, or simply GP. Structurally, GP contacts are rigid unlike the widely known soft contacts. Soft contacts usually cover the entire iris, but the GP contacts are a bit smaller in diameter, covering the pupil and partially the iris that surrounds it. This kind of contact lens is made of Silicone. This is a substance that is known to be oxygen-permeable. An advantage of using GP’s is the reduction or possibly even the elimination of having corneal oxygen deficiency. Having an edge against earlier contacts, the popularity of GP contacts is consistently rising. Despite the advantages, GP contact lenses have also its fair share of disadvantages. Because of its rigidness, first-time users of this kind of contacts usually complain of discomfort during the first week of wearing it. GP contacts take a lot more time for its users to get used to wearing them compared to soft lenses wherein one can get used to it in a matter of hours. It might be also added here that GP contacts are much expensive compared to average contact lenses. This is because the material used for this particular type of contact lens costs higher than those used in ordinary contacts. Because of this, many still opt to use the ordinary and contact lenses instead of the GP contacts. The eyes are a very valuable part of our body. They are the windows to a vast, colorful world. Without this, everything would turn black and lifeless. Because of this, one should not compromise the health and wellbeing of the eyes. Whatever choice of treatment one makes, it is important to regularly remove one’s contact lenses especially at night while sleeping. This prevents your eyes from suffering from low oxygen levels. Make sure to always rest the eyes after using it strenuously as it relaxes the tension in the eye muscles. Remember that we only have two eyes. These precious windows are so important that one’s life goes lifeless and dull without them. If it helps to keep the wellbeing of your eye, there is no harm in trying GP contact lenses. However, proper lifestyle and proper eye care are still great factors when it comes to the safety of your eyes. |
