Toric contact lenses are made up of two curvatures in different angles to aid in correcting astigmatism and near-sightedness (also known as myopia) or far-sightedness (also known as hyperopia).  They do this by combining cylindrical lens effects with the effects of a spherical lens.  It is advised for who have irregularly shaped round corneas (astigmatic) and are in the same way in need of help with visions that are far away or are up close.
Back then, these people are contraindicated or are not advised to wear contact lenses.  If a person has only one eye affected, then the affected eye uses a toric lens while the other eye uses an ordinary contact lens.  They offer unique designs you can choose from.

Toric contact lenses is classified either soft gas permeable or rigid gas permeable.  These contact lenses are not spherically equal that is why there is a necessity to maintain the same orientation no matter what the movement of the eye is or else the acuity of your vision will be affected.  To keep them in its proper placement, they are made a little thicker and heavier at the bottom part of the lens.  This part of the contact lens is pushed downward by the upper lid every time you blink to let the toric lens rotate in the proper position.

Compared to other lenses, toric contact lenses require more time when fitting and it is more expensive.  To make fitting possible, this type of contact lens is marked by many small invisible striation or orientation marks that the wearer would not be able to see while wearing it.  You can choose from RGP or rigid gas permeable, soft gas permeable, and wear it at a longer time, is replaceable, disposable, colored torics and other types.  The most popular is the use of soft lenses because of its comfort and ease.  While some choose the rigid type contact lens because they maintain their cornea shape and gives a much sharper visual acuity for those with astigmatism.

A lens’ rigid capability will aid in covering the correction for astigmatism to be able to follow the shape of the lens of the cornea.  Soft contact lenses are chosen for a higher powered spherical soft lens.  The process of fitting the lens takes a longer time to finish and the result differs from each individual.  You have to try and see which type is for you by going through an ordeal of trial and error with your optometrist.

Toric lenses provide you with the option of going with color that can alter or enhance your natural eye color.  You can opt for disposables if you do not have the time to clean your lenses as often as you should.  Multi-focal choices are available if you are experiencing presbyopia.  Presbyopia is a medical condition contributed by aging that makes it hard for the people experiencing it to read small words that are near or if you have difficulty working long hours in front of your computer.

There are also silicone hydrogel toric lenses available if you want to a long-wearing contact lens that could last you for a month.

As with wearing any type of contact lens, it is advised you see an ophthalmologist or optometrist to have them assess your eyes and prescribe you with the proper aid for your eyes. Do remember that you will always have to keep your contact lenses clean and well-fitted by a specialist to avoid any eye infection or abrasions in your cornea’s surface.
